Why Roast at Home?

  • Custom Flavor: Roasting at home grants you full control over the flavor profile of your coffee. Whether you prefer a light, medium, or dark roast, you can tailor each batch to your exact taste preferences.

  • Optimized Freshness: Nothing beats the freshness of home-roasted coffee. You're in charge of the roast date, ensuring your beans are at their flavor peak when you brew that first cup.

  • Experiment with Specialty Beans: Home roasting opens the door to exploring unique and rare coffee beans from different regions. Discover a world of flavors beyond what's available in pre-packaged, grocery store bags.

  • Cost-Effective: Buying green coffee beans and roasting at home can be more cost-effective in the long run. Skip the premium price tags and enjoy high-quality coffee at a fraction of the cost.

  • Aromatherapy for Coffee Lovers: The roasting process fills your home with the irresistible aroma of fresh coffee. It's not just a beverage; it's an aromatic experience that lingers in your kitchen.

  • Educational Journey: Home roasting is a continuous learning experience. Experiment with different beans, roasting methods, and profiles to deepen your understanding of coffee and refine your roasting skills.

  • Coffee on Demand: Roast small batches as you need them, ensuring you always have freshly roasted coffee on hand. Say goodbye to stale beans and hello to a constant supply of aromatic, flavorful coffee.

  • Community Connection: Share your freshly roasted beans with friends and family, creating a unique and personalized gift that reflects your passion for coffee.

What You'll Need:

  • Green Coffee Beans: Start with quality green coffee beans – the raw gems that hold the potential for your custom coffee.

  • Roasting Method: Choose your preferred roasting method. Whether it's an air popper, a dedicated home roaster, or even the trusty oven – we'll guide you through various approaches.

  • Ventilation: Roasting coffee produces smoke, so ensure good ventilation. If you're roasting indoors, crack a window or consider setting up near a fan to keep the air flowing.

  • Timer and Thermometer: Precision matters. Have a timer to track your roast time and a thermometer to monitor the temperature. Consistency is key to achieving the perfect roast.

Home Roasting Approaches:

  • Air Popper Method: Ideal for beginners, an air popper roasts beans rapidly. Keep an eye on the color change through the transparent chamber and listen for the cracks.

  • Pan Roasting: A stovetop classic, pan roasting requires constant attention. Stir the beans consistently to ensure an even roast and adjust the heat accordingly.

  • Oven Roasting: Roasting in the oven provides a hands-off approach. Preheat, spread the beans on a tray, and let the oven work its magic. Stir occasionally for uniformity.

  • Dedicated Home Roaster: For serious enthusiasts, investing in a dedicated home roaster offers precise control over temperature and roast profiles. Octave Coffee encourages exploring these advanced options for an elevated roasting experience.

The Roasting Process:

  1. Preheat: Regardless of your chosen method, preheat your roasting apparatus. A good starting temperature is typically between 400-500°F (204-260°C).

  2. Add the Beans: Place your green coffee beans in the roasting chamber. The quantity depends on your apparatus, but ensure there's enough room for them to move and expand.

  3. First Crack: As the beans roast, they will undergo the first crack, a pivotal moment where they release moisture and expand. This signifies the development of light roasts.

  4. Monitoring Color: Observe the color change of the beans. Light roasts often conclude shortly after the first crack, while darker roasts continue through a second crack.

  5. Cooling: Once your beans reach the desired roast level, cool them rapidly. This halts the roasting process and ensures a consistent flavor profile.

Storage and Tasting:

Allow your beans to degas for 12-24 hours before sealing them in an airtight container. Freshly roasted coffee reaches its peak flavor within the first week, so make sure to enjoy in your home-roasted beans during this window for unparalleled coffee.

I recently discovered this local coffee company, Octave, and sent a message to their Instagram page. The owner immediately wrote back answering all my questions about what roast blend I should try according to my likes/dislikes. I ordered the two roasts he recommended that my husband and I should try and they DID NOT DISAPPOINT!! they were delivered freshly roasted and ground, and had wonderful flavor. We will definitely be trying their other blends in the future. I love having someone local and super friendly that I felt comfortable to ask questions and get exactly what I wanted. I highly recommend giving Octave a try!

I tried the LO-FI Roast Sumatra. I ground the beans for a stovetop, Bialetti espresso pot. The coffee flavor was very smooth and I enjoyed sipping it slowly, while reading a book. I also tried it as an espresso shot, and the dark chocolate note came through even more pronounced. I highly recommend this blend. Thanks Octave Coffee!

Man oh man, I was able to get my hands on the hip hop blend and must say using a v60 made it a great experience. Tea like notes really came through! Subtle. Could taste that blueberry, not as much citrus as expected but lovely finish. I also had a chance to brew some up with a splash of cream and noticed that the cream gave a nice balance didn’t throw off the profile much. Would highly recommend the hip hop, excited to venture in some other blends and single origins.

Some of the best and freshest coffee I've ever had. Easy ordering and fast delivery. This coffee (Funk, Folk, Hip-Hop, Classical, and Grunge Rock so far) tastes so smooth and complex. Kinda like it was roasted this week instead of last year, because it was! (unlike the coffee beans I've been buying at the grocery store) Steve and company are so knowledgeable and friendly. The music themes on their coffee, their website and Instagram are cool, amusing, and actually informative. If you enjoy great, fresh roasted coffee, you owe it to yourself to try any of Octave Coffee's selections.

Ordered three whole bean bags, shipped very fast with great packaging. First blend bag done; on to the second one. Both bags have a strong yet smooth taste with no bitterness. Bean quality is excellent and good resealable (not twisted!) bags are a plus! Highly recommend!! :)
